Abbotsbury Swannery: A Unique Treasure

Abbotsbury is a small, magical village in Dorset County, with a population of just 481. Despite its size, Abbotsbury has a lot to offer. Today, I’m headed to the renowned Abbotsbury Swannery, a unique and enchanting destination.

Journey to Abbotsbury

X52 is a Double-decker bus with a partially open roof.

I boarded the X53 bus and enjoyed a 45-minute ride from Weymouth through the beautiful English countryside. The X52 bus is also an option; you can catch one of the two almost every hour. Riding up top of this double-decker bus was thrilling in its own right.

Upon arriving in Abbotsbury, I took a 20-minute walk to the Swannery. Although there was a hiker’s path I missed, I found myself navigating the narrow country road, sharing it with passing cars. Fortunately, a kind woman at the help desk later informed me of the safer path for my return journey. The path is a lot less dangerous!

Ticket Information and Pricing

Before I discuss my experience, here is some essential information on ticket prices and how to purchase them. You can buy a combined ticket for the Swannery and the nearby Subtropical Gardens, saving about £5. The best part is that you don’t have to use both tickets on the same day, giving you flexibility in your itinerary. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance.

As of my visit in 2024, the ticket prices were reasonable, with discounts available for children, seniors, and families. They also offer seasonal passes for those who wish to visit multiple times throughout the year. It’s best to check their official website for the most up-to-date pricing information and any special offers. I booked a ticket online for the Swannary and Subtropical Gardens for £18.95. The ticket will be emailed to you, so make sure you can access your email.

A Warm Welcome and a Feathered Friend

Tawny Wood Owl

Upon arriving at the Swannery, the first sight was a tent off to the left, housing a group of owls available for holding. Although the line was long, I made a mental note to return and interact with these majestic creatures. On my way out, I finally got to hold an owl and chat with the knowledgeable and passionate staff. Did you know that owls are solitary creatures? This fascinating tidbit was just one of many I learned.

The Willow Maze Adventure

Next, I ventured into the Swannery’s Willow Maze. Initially hesitant to enter alone, I decided to embrace the adventure. The maze’s towering walls were daunting; at one point, I heard a young English girl calling for help. Despite feeling a similar sense of unease, I pressed on and eventually reached the center, where discovering the “egg” was thrilling. Navigating my way out of the maze proved to be an exhilarating challenge, and I felt a sense of relief as I emerged victorious.

Swan Spectacle at Feeding Time

Feeding Time

I timed my visit to coincide with the swan feeding at noon; there is also feeding at 4:00. Abbotsbury Swannery is home to over 600 swans, more than Abbotsbury’s human population! Seeing them all gather for feeding was spectacular. Some swans were sectioned off to protect their adorable cygnets, adding to the heartwarming spectacle.

Fun fact: Did you know that swans mate for life? Most swan species, including the well-known mute swan, form monogamous pair bonds that can last for many years, often until one partner dies. This lifelong pairing helps swans raise their offspring and maintain stable family units. If a swan loses its mate, it may find another partner. Still, the initial bond is usually robust and long-lasting.

A Perfect Ending

After the feeding frenzy, I took countless photos of the adorable cygnets. I even had the unique opportunity to sit in a replica swan nest, feeling part of the swan family. Before departing, I revisited the owl tent and finally held one of the majestic birds. Despite my fear of birds, the passionate owl expert made me feel comfortable.

Dining and Final Thoughts

There was a café inside the park where you could purchase food or bring your own. I saw families having gorgeous picnics in the Swannery. However, those looking to eat in town have several options. I chose to eat at Abbey House, a place I have visited many times. It was a chance to say hi to the owner, have a spectacular lunch, and enjoy the fantastic views. I highly recommend it!
