Traveling to England? It’s about more than sightseeing; it’s a cultural delight to taste the local cuisine. As you explore England’s charming streets and green countryside, the aroma of traditional English food will truly entice your senses.
A journey through England’s culinary history is an adventure in itself, filled with flavors that tell a story of tradition, history, and diversity. So, get ready to satisfy your appetite as we introduce you to some of England’s classic dishes.
The Staples of Traditional English Food

Fish and Chips This classic dish, featuring fresh cod fillets in crispy batter with chunky chips, is a must-try and a tribute to English coastal communities. This dish is best served by the sea with a side of mushy peas and curry sauce. Remember to grab the malt vinegar for this daily catch.
Full English Breakfast Kick off your day with this hearty meal of bacon, sausages, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, baked beans, and toast. It’s an English tradition that sets you up for the day.
Sunday Roast This beloved family meal includes roasted meat, potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables, and gravy. It captures the essence of English togetherness and warmth. This is a must-have for an English holiday. I recommend planning ahead as most traditional pub roasts are only served on Sunday at lunchtime and not all pubs serve “Sunday Roast”. This is my favorite meal to have in England. There is just something about the meat, potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding all smothered in a delicious brown gravy. Delicious!
Curry Thanks to influences from Indian cuisine, the spicy and colorful curry has become an integral part of English food culture. Did you know that Chicken Tikka Masala is England’s national dish?
Regional Delicacies Across England

Cornish Pasty This rustic pie, filled with meat, potatoes, and turnips, is a tribute to Cornwall’s mining heritage. You can order the traditional pasty or choose on of the other culinary creations. My favorite is lamb and mint. Delicious!
Sausage Roll A comforting handheld treat featuring succulent sausage in a flaky, buttery puff pastry. It’s an English snack-time favorite.
Yorkshire Puddings Contrary to what the name suggests, these savory bites, made from eggs, flour, and milk, are traditional accompaniments to a classic roast. Moreover, they are most similar to an American popover. Would you like gravy with your ‘pud’? Yes, please!
Tips for Trying English Food
Consider sampling local dishes in gastropubs and traditional tea rooms. Gastropubs often offer a modern twist on classic dishes, while tea rooms serve rustic cakes and scones in a nostalgic setting. Don’t forget must-try dishes like English pies, stews, hearty soups, and the quintessential scone with clotted cream and jam.
In conclusion, tasting local English cuisine is an enriching part of your travel experience, offering a deep dive into England’s cultural heritage. So, when in England, feast, indulge, and savor. Because here, every meal is an adventure and every bite, a journey.
Update
Fish Pie I have been reluctant to try fish pie for many years. I finally tried this famous dish after seeing it served at the most beautiful pub with the most delectable menu.
Fish pie is made with various fish, shellfish, and mashed potatoes. Of course, there are other ingredients and herbs, but these are the main ones.
As soon as the first bite hit my lips, I knew I had made a mistake in refusing to try this dish for almost two decades! I have since tried two other fish pies: one homemade at a friend’s house in a nearby village and another from the famous British retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S).
The conclusion: I love fish pie!
